Etymology & Historical Origin - Aaliyah

Aaliyah is an Arabic female given name taken from the masculine “Aali” (عالي) meaning “sublime” (as in exalted, awe-inspiring). Furthermore, in Hebrew, to make an “aliyah” means to go up toward God, or more simply, “to rise, ascend.” Apropos, Aliyah also referred to the journey of the Jewish people to the Promised Land. Westerners were introduced to this unusual Arabic name by American recording artist Aaliyah Dana Haughton (1979-2001).

Her first two albums (released in 1994 and 1996) sold a combined seven million copies and she became widely known. Her unique name struck a chord with her millions of fans, and “Aaliyah” became a favorite girls name in American for the first time in 1994. It entered the charts at an impressive position #204, but it grew significantly in the year 2001 upon the premature death of the young pop star. Since 2001, the name has been a Top 100 favorite.
