Etymology & Historical Origin - Adelina

Adelina is the Italian, Portuguese and Spanish diminutive of Adela. Adela, in turn, is Germanic in origin, from the element “adal” meaning “noble” (the German Adalheidis – or Adelaide – comes from the same root). Adela was a name given to an 8th century Frankish princess, the daughter of King Dagobert II of Austrasia (the eastern Frankish Empire at the time). Dagobert II ascended the throne around the age of six, but was quickly deposed and exiled after some typical medieval power-jockeying. During his exile in Ireland, Dagobert II married an Anglo-Saxon princess with whom he produced five children (Adela being one of them). After becoming widows, Adela and her sister Irmina found a holy calling and each founded a convent in present-day western Germany. The French-Norman King William I of England (aka William the Conqueror) also named one of his many daughters Adela in the 11th century. This Adela, Countess of Blois, would later become the mother of King Stephen of England. The Latinized Adela and the French Adèle found popularity throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Adelina developed as a diminutive used primarily among the Italians, Portuguese and Spanish (but also the Germans).

Popularity of the Name Adelina

Usage of Adelina dates back to 1884 in the United States; however, the name was never heavily used before it completely disappeared from the Top 1000 list in 1945. Adelina would go into hibernation for over 60 years only to reemerge recently in 2010. The name’s reappearance on the charts is largely owed to a revival interest in names like Adeline, Adelaide and Adele (all of which have shown remarkable improvements on the charts in recent years). All of these names certainly sound “noble” and dignified. Simply risk-free, old-fashioned and downright lovely. You can go with the two-syllable French Adele, the three-syllable German Adelaide/Adeline or get more fanciful with the Latinate four syllable Adelina.
