Characteristics of Adyson
Etymology & Historical Origin - Adyson
Adyson is an Americanized respelling of Addison which is the transferred use of a Scottish surname meaning “son of Addie”, Addie being a medieval Scottish Lowlands nickname for Adam. So Addison basically means “son of Adam”. Only in recent years (since the 1990s) has Addison seen success as a given name (primarily female) and mostly restricted to the United States, Canada and Australia. Addison actually started out in the United States as a masculine personal name, but eventually American parents of baby girls responded to this androgynous sounding surname and started bestowing it upon their daughters in 1994. It essentially coincided with the popularity of Madison (a similar sounding name used heavily in America). The more popular Addison became for girls, the less popular it was for boys. It finally fell off the male charts in 2009 so now the name is considered almost exclusively female. Addisyn, Addyson and Adyson emerged as spelling corruptions (American parents have a compulsion to put their own “yooneek” spelling stamps on otherwise ultra-trendy names such as Addison).
Popularity of the Name Adyson
The Adyson spelling first appeared on the U.S. female naming charts in 2006. She saw immediate success in the first year or two but has since retreated back down to low levels of usage. Addison, on the other hand, is one of those super-duper ultra-trendy names right now; her popularity was fast and furious (ranked 13th most popular nationwide in 2011). In fact, nearly 80% of the “Addisons” being born each year get the traditional Scottish spelling. Addyson and Addisyn are the next most common while Adyson remains in last place in terms of parental spelling preference.
