Etymology & Historical Origin - Alanna

Alanna is a variant of Alana. The name Alana is thought to have originated from one of two places. For one, Alana could be a simple, feminized version of the Celtic male name Alan which means “rock”. Secondly, Alana is thought to come from an old Gaelic term of endearment “a leanbh” (pronounced alanna) which means “O child.” This Gaelic word is also often translated to “darling” to underscore the warmth of the expression “O Child”. Alanna and Alannah are two other spelling variations of Alana. Outside of these Celtic/Gaelic roots, Alana is also a Hawaiian name that signifies a “beautiful offering” or from the Polynesian “Alana” indicating a “new beginning”. In English-speaking countries, Alana is a relatively recent coinage and Alanna with two “n”s is even more modern.

Popularity of the Name Alanna

Alanna first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1974 (Alana came on to the scene in 1962). In the past almost 40 years, Alanna has grown in usage but not remarkably so. Since the late 1990s, the name has reached a plateau and doesn’t appear to be gaining any more ground on the charts. Alana with one “n” is actually quite a bit more popular. By adding the second “n” parents are probably trying to fancy up this “darling child”. There also appears to be some pronunciation confusion with this name, as some people pronounce it ah-LAWN-ah and some ah-LAY-na or ah-LAH-na. It just comes down to preference.
