Etymology & Historical Origin - Amelie

Amelie is the German and French form of Amelia (although the French render the name with an accent mark over the first “e” as in Amélie). The female name Amelia is actually the blending of two names. The Latin “Emília” (Emily) and the Latinized Germanic name Amalia – which comes from the German “amal” meaning “work”. Some say that the name was actually coined by the English author Henry Fielding for the title character in his 18th century novel, “Amelia,” but it appears that similar forms of the name were already in existence in the 17th century. The name Amelia has enjoyed immense success throughout the English-speaking world. It is currently a Top 10 girl’s name in England and Australia, and also ranks quite high in Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the United States. The German/French form of the name, Amelie, is also ranked in the Top 100 in England, Scotland and Australia but is most popular in Germany, Belgium and Austria. They also use Amélie with a fair amount of frequency in France, as well. So while Amelie is a favorite in Europe, North America still sticks by the Latinate form of Amelia.

Popularity of the Name Amelie

Amelie showed spotty usage in the late 1800s in the United States, but for all intents and purposes the name really didn’t hit the charts until 2003. We suspect the U.S. release of the delightful French foreign film “Amélie” (2001) had something to do with the name’s sudden onset of usage. Amelie has climbed the charts a few hundred positions up the Top 1000 list but appears to be parking herself in the Top 700. This means that Amelie is rarely used in the United States, perhaps a little too European for the average American taste. Emily and Amelia are ϋber-ultra trendy baby girl names here in the United States, so Amelie does offer a new fresh twist to otherwise overused names. Most likely, however, American parents opting for Amelie or Amélie over Amelia and Emily have close French or German heritage.
