Etymology & Historical Origin - Amy

The name Amy comes from the Old French (“Amee”) which means ‘beloved’ by way of feminizing the Latin “amare” (‘to love’). The Latin equivalent – “Amata” – was born in classical Greek mythology as the wife of King Latinus from Virgil’s Aeneid. As the story goes, King Latinus (king of the Latins) and Amata were the parents of Lavinia who would eventually marry the hero Aeneas and become the mother of the Roman people.

Popularity of the Name Amy

Amy has always been a relatively popular name in the United States for over 100 years. It did drop down to moderate levels of success between the 1920’s and 1940’s, but it bounced back slowly so that by the 1970’s, the name clearly hit its peak. Since then, Amy has lost some favor but we expect it to stick around. The name is simple, feminine and unassuming. For those parents who want to dress it up a bit can use the French Aimée.
