Etymology & Historical Origin - Anabelle

Most people probably assume that the name Anabelle is an elaborate pairing of the names Ana and Belle; but it’s not. Anabelle is actually derived from an old Anglo-Norman name, Amabel, which is an Old French variant of the Latin “amabilis” meaning ‘loveable.’ The now-defunct name Amabel eventually morphed into Anabel and Mabel. Annabel became a particular favorite in Scotland and was confined there from the 12th century until very recently. Today, it’s a commonplace name throughout the English-speaking world. There are several variants of this name depending on spelling preference (one “N” or two) or the number of syllables (three or four).

Popularity of the Name Anabelle

The name Annabelle is currently more popular that Anabelle with one “n” (so is Annabella with four syllables). Anabelle is the third most popular spelling of this revival name. Anabelle is basically riding the coattails of a resurgence interest in this name. However, the basic names of Anna and Bella separately are by far the most favored names of today. Anabelle with one “n” only first appeared on the American female naming charts in 2005 and she’s been showing upwards momentum ever since. There are several variations of this name (six in all): Annabelle, Annabella, Anabelle, Anabella, Annabel and Anabel (in order of popularity). It really comes down to the spelling preference of the parent. The “belle” suffix gives this name a certain sweetness. We agree with the name’s etymology – it’s quite “loveable”!

Literary Characters of the Baby Name Anabelle

Annabel Lee (Annabel Lee) Annabel Lee is the title character of Edgar Allan Poe’s 1849 poem of the same name, published shortly after his death that very year, and is widely believed to have been based on his wife, Virginia. The subject matter of the poem is one of Poe’s most maudlin and favorite – the death of a beautiful young woman. Annabel was the life love of the narrator from childhood; her union with him resulted in so much happiness that it made the angels envious, and they caused her death. Death is no competition to this young man, however, as his love for Annabel will last until the end of time and they shall be reunited when the time is right. Until that moment comes, however, the poet lies by her side every night “… in her tomb by the sounding sea”. Morbid, perhaps, but also hauntingly beautiful, as is the name, Annabel.
