Etymology & Historical Origin - Andre
André is the French version of the name Andrew, which in turn is the anglicized form of the Greek name Andreas, stemming from “andr” which translates into ‘man, warrior’. Andrew was one of the first disciples called by Jesus in the New Testament. A Galilean fisherman and the brother of St. Peter, St. Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist and one of the first to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. After the Resurrection, St. Andrew went on to preach in Asia Minor and Greece. He became one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages and was chosen to be the patron saint of Russia, Greece and Scotland. Andrew has long been a popular boys’ name in the English-speaking world (particularly in Scotland), and many variations of this name exist in other European languages: André (French), Andrés (Spanish), Andreas (Greek and German), Anders (Scandinavian), Andrea (Italian) and Andrei (Russian and Polish).
Popularity of the Name Andre
Andre is a name that’s been around in America for over 100 years. The name’s popularity was very low back in the early 1900s but it began to show some life in the 1930s. The name climbed steadily on the charts from that point and reached its peak popularity in 1970s and 80s. Historically, Andre has never made the Top 100 list of most favored boy names, and today the name has some backwards momentum on the charts. It’s not going away by any means; it’s just not a name on the forefront of popularity. Andre is most popular in the state of Rhode Island (100th most popular boy’s name in 2010). As a French name, Andre has style and sophistication. It may not be the most “manly” of sounding names, but it has a confidence that doesn’t care. It’s a nice twist to the name Andrew.

Children's Books on the Baby Name Andre
Andre (Lew Dietz) - Relates the experiences of the Goodridge family of Maine in raising, training, and establishing a relationship with a harbor seal from puppyhood to adulthood. Recommended for ages 7-10.
Andre the Famous Harbor Seal (Fran Hodgkins) - In 1961, Harry Goodridge, harbormaster of Rockport, ME, adopted a seal pup. In describing their relationship, Hodgkins takes readers through Andre's summers spent entertaining crowds with his tricks; winters in the sea or at nearby aquariums; a life-threatening injury sustained in a fight with another seal; the unveiling of the life-sized statue of Andre that still stands in the harbor; and, in 1986, his death on a deserted beach and Goodridge's solitary journey to bring him home and bury him. The unvarnished approach to the telling makes the final moments of the account unexpectedly touching. Frenkel's light-filled, realistic color illustrations call to mind a more innocent time. This is a story about connecting with nature. Recommended for ages 4-8.
Open: An Autobiography (Andre Agassi) - The New York Times says: ““Honest in a way that such books seldom are. An uncommonly well-written sports memoir. Bracingly devoid of triumphalist homily, Agassi’s is one of the most passionately anti-sports books ever written by a superstar athlete.” Recommended for ages young adult.
