Etymology & Historical Origin - Annabell

Annabell is a slight spelling variation of Annabel, a name popularized by the Scots. Most people would assume that Annabel is derived from the coupling of two female names (Anna and Belle) when in fact it actually comes from the medieval favorite Amabel, an old Anglo-Norman female personal name which is an Old French variant of the Latin “amabilis” meaning “loveable”. The now-extinct Amabel eventually morphed into Anabel and Mabel. Annabel became a particular favorite in Scotland where it remained confined from the 12th century until very recently. In more modern times, An(n)abel(l)(e/a) has enjoyed commonplace usage throughout the English-speaking world. There are several variants of this name depending on spelling preference (e.g., one or two Ns or Ls, three or four syllables, with or without an A or an E on the end). There are currently seven different ways to spell the “loveable” Annabell.

Popularity of the Name Annabell

The Annabell spelling has been around since the late 19th century in the United States. It was used (although relatively rarely) up through 1938. Then the name disappeared from America’s Top 1000 list of baby girl names. Annabell just recently came back to the charts at position #965 out of 1000 in 2011. In other words, this is one of the least preferred spellings of the Scottish Annabel. Today parents prefer to tack on an “e” or an “a” to the end of the name: Annabelle and Annabella are the most popular ways to spell this name, followed by Anabelle, Annabel, Anabella, Annabell and, finally, the minimalistic Anabel.

Literary Characters of the Baby Name Annabell

Annabel Lee (Annabel Lee) Annabel Lee is the title character of Edgar Allan Poe’s 1849 poem of the same name, published shortly after his death that very year, and is widely believed to have been based on his wife, Virginia. The subject matter of the poem is one of Poe’s most maudlin and favorite – the death of a beautiful young woman. Annabel was the life love of the narrator from childhood; her union with him resulted in so much happiness that it made the angels envious, and they caused her death. Death is no competition to this young man, however, as his love for Annabel will last until the end of time and they shall be reunited when the time is right. Until that moment comes, however, the poet lies by her side every night “… in her tomb by the sounding sea”. Morbid, perhaps, but also hauntingly beautiful, as is the name, Annabel.
