Etymology & Historical Origin - Aria

Aria is the English vocabulary word mainly defining an expressive and elaborate operatic solo (or duet). Aria comes from the Italian word which literally translates to ‘air’. The name Aria is also sometimes associated with the Hebrew word meaning "lioness". Furthermore, in Greek mythology, Aria was the name of a beautiful mortal woman from the island of Crete. Apollo (the god of music and poetry) fell in love with her and together they produced a son, Miletos. Their story pretty much stops there but it further underscores Aria’s connection with music and melody (since she was one of the god of music Apollo’s many conquests). As a feminine personal name, Aria is really a 21st century coinage so it’s a relatively new addition to the list of girl names.

Popularity of the Name Aria

Aria made her ‘singing’ debut on the U.S. naming charts in 2000. The name was influenced by other musically-inspired girl names (such as Cadence, Harmony and Melody). Aria soared up the charts in 10 short years from complete obscurity to mild moderation. It is a name now given to roughly 900 baby girls per year keeping it an original and unique choice. Operatic arias are among the most beautiful pieces of music, so the name carries with it a dramatic sense of voice. This little name with only four letters but three syllables certainly contains its own pocket size punch. When you hear the word Aria, you think of something beautiful. It could also be a fun name for an ‘Air’ sign (Aquarius, Gemini or Libra).

Aria (Peter Elbling) - Unable to speak, Aria plays in the jungle where she finds friends among the wild birds whose song she imitates. When the bird sellers take advantage of her gift, Aria frees the birds from the traps. When the bird sellers come after her, Aria has to trust the birds to help her. Recommended for ages 5-8.

Aria of the Sea (Dia Calhoun) - On the island of Normost, in the kingdom of Windward, 13-year-old Cerinthe Gale is a folk healer who dreams of being a dancer. When her mother falls ill, Cerinthe fights to save her — but fails. She blames herself for her mother’s death, gives up healing, and decides to pursue dance. Cerinthe travels across Windward to audition at the School of the Royal Dancers, which accepts her even though she is a commoner. It should be the beginning of a brilliant future, but Cerinthe feels an emptiness she can’t identify. A disagreement with a young man, a conflict with a cruel teacher, a rivalry with an aristocratic classmate, Elliana, and a meeting with a mederi — a healer with magical powers — add to her anguish. When the rivalry between the two girls causes a terrible accident, Elliana’s life hangs in the balance. Cerinthe faces the same awful choice she had faced with her mother: Should she try to heal Elliana herself or hope that the mederi arrives in time? Only the song of the Sea Maid holds the answer. Aria of the Sea is an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a Book Sense 76 Recommended Children’s Book, and a New York Public Library Best Book for the Teen Age. Recommended for ages 10-15.
