Etymology & Historical Origin - Audrina

Audrina is a fanciful elaboration of Audrey. The name Audrey originates from an Old English female first name Ǽðelprðy which, broken apart, means “æðel” (noble) and “pryð” (strength). The Old English name is borne by a popular 7th century saint commonly known as Etheldreda (Latinized form of Ǽðelprðy) or simply by the pet form, Audrey. St. Audrey (as she is commonly known) maintained her virginity through two marriages, ultimately escaping the advances of her second husband and founded an abbey where she lived out her life devoted to Christianity. The name was popular in the Middle Ages and used by Shakespeare in his 1623 comedy, “As You Like It.” Ultimately, the name fell out of favor but was revived again in the 19th century. Audrina is a flowery version of this name recently created in the United States.

Popularity of the Name Audrina

Audrina did not appear on the American female naming charts until 2007. The name was influenced by the celebrity of Audrina Patridge, a reality TV star from MTV’s “The Hills”. She was also a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2010. This is a girl whose name was quickly thrown into the spotlight and many of her fans apparently found her name appealing. Audrina has gone from complete obscurity to semi-moderate usage in the United States within three years. This is clearly a name that belongs in the “pop-culture-influenced” category. Even though the name is a new coinage, it has a Latinate, old-fashioned quality. It sounds like it could be Italian or Spanish giving it a European resonance. But it’s not. Instead, it’s more of an Americanized elaboration of the old English Audrey. It’s a pretty name and another even more elaborate version, Audriana, recently followed her onto the charts.
