Etymology & Historical Origin - Aylin
Aylin is a name with two possible etymologies and two possible pronunciations. In the Turkish language, Aylin means “moon halo”. In the Mapudungun language of the Mapuche people (indigenous peoples of southern Chile and Argentina), Aylín is said to mean “clear, transparent”. Since a moon’s halo is transparent, the name’s two separate etymologies are still somewhat thematically similar. Aylin gives us a sense of a clear and bright aura, so it feels very pretty. Plus the Mapuche connection explains the popularity of this name in Chile (where it’s a Top 100 favorite girl’s name).
Popularity of the Name Aylin
Aylin first appeared on the American female charts in 1997 but at first it really kind of flustered near the bottom. Today the name has climbed to levels of very low moderation which is still impressive given her obscurity to the average Western ear and the newness of her place on the charts. We’re guessing that Hispanic Americans may be the driving force behind Aylin’s usage since the name shows prominence in Spanish-speaking Chile. It’s hard to say for sure. One thing we do know, Aylin is a unique name with unique origins and therefore an original choice. While the pronunciation seems debatable and uncertain, both possibilities still sound lovely.
