Etymology & Historical Origin - Bentley
Bentley is the transferred use of an old Anglo-Saxon surname derived from a place name. The Olde English word “beonet” referred to bent-grass or reeds, and “lëah” meant “wood clearing or meadow”, so the name Bentley originated as a location name indicating a clearing overgrown with bent-grass or reeds. The surname was developed in order to identify a person who dwelled in or hailed from a town so-called Bentley named for this topographical feature. There are several such places throughout England including the counties of Essex, Suffolk, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. The first recorded spelling of the name occurred in the 12th century and was rendered as “de Benetlega”. The name Bentley is also strongly associated with the British automobile; a name synonymous with wealth and luxury. Founded in 1919 by Englishman W.O. Bentley, the company originally manufactured airplane engines for WWI before turning its attention to the burgeoning auto industry after the Great War. In 1931 Bentley was acquired by Rolls-Royce, another name tantamount to extravagance. The name Bentley has “hockey-sticked” in popularity on the name graphs in the United States.
Popularity of the Name Bentley
The name Bentley popped onto the U.S. popularity charts once in the late 1880s and then again in the early 1960s. Other than that, the name lived in obscurity. However, its brief early appearance tells us that Bentley has been around for longer than we would have expected. Nonetheless, the name does not really come into use until very recently, in 2007. In four remarkably short years, the name advanced an almost unprecedented 900 positions on the American charts, finally landing a spot on the Top 100 list in 2011 (#75). What’s even more impressive is that the name experienced most of its growth between the years 2009 and 2010. To whom does this name owe almost all of its sudden popularity? An MTV reality star named Maci Bookout who appeared on the cable channel’s “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom” series (2009). Yes, a teenage mom almost single handedly put this name on the map. Apparently she made quite an impression on young mothers across America. Talk about pop-culture influences! Yikers! Aside from children naming children and influencing what other children name their children, Bentley is also reflective of the “Last Names First” naming trend so popular today. Not to mention this particular surname has a certain aristocratic resonance thanks mainly to the ritzy car that shares its name.

Children's Books on the Baby Name Bentley
Snowflake Bentley (Jacqueline Briggs Martin) - Most children are captivated by snow, but how many go on to make it their lifework? This beautiful biography, winner of the 1999 Caldecott Medal, tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera, his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs (many that are still used in nature photography today), examining the tiny crystals and their delicate, mathematical structures. Jacqueline Briggs Martin tells this tale with simple, graceful prose that will engage children's imaginations. Recommended for ages 4-8.
