Etymology & Historical Origin - Bently

Bentley is the transferred use of an old Anglo-Saxon surname derived from a place name. The Olde English word “beonet” referred to bent-grass or reeds, and “lëah” meant “wood clearing or meadow”, so the name Bentley originated as a location name indicating a clearing overgrown with bent-grass or reeds. The surname was developed in order to identify a person who dwelled in or hailed from a town so-called Bentley named for this topographical feature. There are several such places throughout England including the counties of Essex, Suffolk, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. The first recorded spelling of the name occurred in the 12th century as de Benetlega. The name Bentley is also strongly associated with the British automobile; a name synonymous with wealth and luxury. Founded in 1919 by W.O. Bentley, the company originally manufactured airplane engines for WWI before turning its attention to the burgeoning auto industry after the Great War. In 1931 Bentley was acquired by Rolls-Royce, another name tantamount to extravagance. The name Bentley has “hockey-sticked” in popularity on the name graphs in the United States. As is typical of American parents, random other spellings have since emerged: Bently and Bentlee.

Popularity of the Name Bently

The name Bentley has recently soared in popularity in the United States and we’re here to tell you the nauseating truth. While having existed prior on the charts, Bentley rose almost 850 positions on the charts between 2009 and 2011. One of the most remarkable gains ever experienced by a name in the history of American baby-naming! Of course, this begs the question WHY? Bentley obviously mimics the ϋber-trend of bestowing surnames as given names, but something more was happening with this particular name…and it all has to do with MTV. Seventeen year old Maci Bookout appeared on MTV’s wildly popular series “16 and Pregnant” followed up by the sequel “Teen Mom” in 2009. Both shows featured her baby boy Bentley Cadence Edwards (b. 2008). Yup, folks, that’s about it. A teenage mom almost single handedly put this name on the map. Apparently she made quite an impression on future young mothers across America. Talk about pop-culture influences! Now that Bentley is so heavily used, other respellings have emerged. Bently came in 2007 and has already risen to levels of so-so moderation. Then came Bentlee in 2010. What’s next? Bhentlie? We definitely put this one in our special “to each his own” category.
