Etymology & Historical Origin - Benton

Benton is the transferred use of an English surname derived from a place name. The villages in England so-called Benton were originally recorded as “Bentune” from the Olde English “beonet” (bent grass) and “tūn” (settlement, town). The surname did not appear in writing until the mid 16th century and was originally rendered as “Benntine”. The Benton surname would have been assigned to a person who hailed from one of these "Bentune" towns but relocated someplace else. Their place of birth would provide a unique identifier for the purposes of taxation. As a forename, Benton dates back to at least the 19th century in the United States. Surnames as first names are quite trendy today in the U.S. especially, but they were not uncommon 100+ years ago when children (mostly boys) were given family names of importance (such as a mother’s maiden name).

Benton can be added to the list if other “Benny”-like surnames currently on the U.S. Top 1000 such as Bentley, Benson and Bennett. As a forename, Benton actually dates back to 1880 (the first year for which we have available data). For the first half of the 20th century, Benton was used lightly and sparingly before disappearing off the American radar completely at the end of the 1960s. In fact, the name just resurfaced after a 40+ year hiatus from usage. Benton’s return to the charts is no doubt due to the surname craze. Parents are constantly looking for new options. Ben is an obvious nickname.
