Etymology & Historical Origin - Boston

Boston is the transferred use of a place name; generally speaking the largest city located in the state of Massachusetts and one of the oldest cities established in the United States. The city of Boston actually got its name from another small port town called Boston in Lincolnshire, England due to the fact that many of its immigrants originally hailed from there. The town of Boston in England means “Botolph's town” in honor of a 7th century English saint named Botolph (or Botwulf in Old English). Today St. Botolph's Church is known affectionately as The Stump since its massive tower stands tall and proud and can be seen for miles from the English city of Boston. St Botolph is the patron saint of travelers and farming and his feast day in England is June 17. So this is where Boston, Massachusetts got its name – from a small English town named after some obscure early English saint. Incidentally, Boston, MA was actually originally called Trimountaine in reference to the three hills surrounding the early settlement (only Beacon Hill remains today). As a masculine forename, Boston became popularized by the trendy interest in place names as given names (Brooklyn, Austin, Dallas, etc). The name is mainly used in the United States, but occasionally you’ll find it appear in Canada and Australia.

Popularity of the Name Boston

Boston is a pretty new first name for American baby boys. It only first appeared on the charts in 2004 so the name doesn’t even have ten years under his belt. There are several more place names currently more popular for American baby boys today such as Austin, Carson, Dallas and Phoenix, but Boston has shown impressive upwards trajectory on the charts. Although we’re pretty sure Boston is done growing in usage since he’s showing slight signs of slippage in the past couple of years. We'll have to wait and see where he goes from here. In 1979 actor Kurt Russell had a son (before marrying Goldie Hawn) whom he named Boston. Boston is a wondeful place, so we understand why some parents want to pay it homage, but the name feels a tiny bit awkward. On the other hand, we can’t help but to picture a little boy nicknamed “the Boss” because after all you are under the employment of your child, right? We’re guessing a lot of parents choose this name because Boston, MA holds some significance for them as a meaningful place.
