Etymology & Historical Origin - Brendon

Brendon is the English equivalent to the Irish Brendan. Brendan developed from an old Irish name Breandán (earlier version: Bréanainn) which originated from the Welsh (Celtic) word “breehin” meaning “prince”. There are two prominent Irish saints who held this name. The most famous is the 6th century Saint Brendan the Navigator who purportedly sailed across the Atlantic searching for the Isle of the Blessed and claimed to have set foot on American soil (before any other white man). The other famous Irish saint, Saint Brendan of Birr (who was a friend and contemporary of Brendan the Navigator), was apparently carried away heavenward by angels. The legends of these great Irish saints promulgated during the Middle Ages aided in the name’s survival into modern times. The variation of Brandon (considered connected to Brendon) is more popular in the United States, England and Canada.

Popularity of the Name Brendon

Branden, Brandon, Brendan, Brenden and Brendon. It’s all so confusing. Brendan is the oldest of these names on the American charts (since 1941) and Brandon is the most common (a Top 50 choice today). All the names are somewhat related in terms of their Irish etymology (although the “Bren-“ names are more true to the “princely” Irish meaning). Brendon first appeared on the U.S. charts in 1967 and reached its peak usage in 1998 at position #318 on the Top 1000 list. Not coincidentally, Brandon was the 7th most commonly used baby boy name in the country at the time and Brendan was ranked on the Top 100. All of these names sort of mimic each other’s popularity over the years with one or two getting preferential treatment. Throw in names like Brayden, Braylen, Brayan, Brennan and Brenton – all of these “Bra-“ and “Bre-“ names start to blur together. Brendan, Brendon and Brandon are at least legitimate, time-tested spellings.
