Etymology & Historical Origin - Bria

For the most part Bria is a made-up name. However, like Bree, Bria could have been inspired by the Irish female name Bríghe (which is a contracted form of Bridget) from the Gaelic noun “brígh” meaning “power, strength, vigor and virtue”. See the name Bridget for more information on the Irish goddess and saint. Alternately, Bria may have also found her inspiration in names like Gabriella, Briana or Briella.

Popularity of the Name Bria

Bria first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1991 and shot up to position #175 by 1993 – a pretty fast ascent indeed! We are not entirely certain what exactly was behind Bria’s sudden popularity on the charts, but we suspect it had something to do with comic-superstar Eddie Murphy naming is first daughter Bria in November 1989. Bria achieved her best year ever in 1993 (which is a slight delayed reaction) and the states which saw the highest concentration per capita of folk naming their own daughters Bria were Maryland, Mississippi and Louisiana (among other southern states) suggesting Bria became a name of choice within the African-American community specifically. After the initial frenzy over this name wore off, Bria retreated back down to the lower levels of the Top 1000 list. It looked as if she may have been headed off the list completely but showed a mild comeback more recently. Bria is an easygoing name; it’s short and sweet, pretty and simple.
