Etymology & Historical Origin - Cameron

Cameron comes from a medieval Highland Scottish clan name and is derived from the Gaelic words “cam” and “sròn” which lightheartedly translates to “crooked nose” (likely a nickname given to the clan’s first patriarch who may have had a hooked nose). The Highland Cameron clan was celebrated for their courage and ingenuity, and their clan motto is a Gaelic phrase meaning “unite.” The first recorded spelling of the family name appeared in the 13th century and was rendered as “de Kamerun”. In the Lowlands of Scotland, the clansmen are thought to have a territorial origin from the lands of Cameron near Edinburgh. In any case, Cameron has long been used as a forename for males and it is still quite common in Scotland (a Top 25 favorite). The United States is the only English-speaking country that really considers Cameron gender-neutral (although it is given to baby girls far less frequently). Cameron for boys is also on the Top 100 lists of England, Australia and Canada.

Popularity of the Name Cameron

Cameron has been around as a boy’s name since at least the late 19th century, although it did not become consistently used until the 1940s. Even back then Cameron was not a particularly popular name for baby boys. The name really started to take off in the 1980s and reached a Top 100 spot on the male charts in 1987. Cameron’s peak popularity for boys came in the late 1990s and into the early 2000s when he was pretty much a Top 50 choice among American parents of little boys. Today, the name seems to be holding strong for little boys (still a Top 100). Even though parents of little girls picked up Cameron in the 1980s, it doesn’t seem to have swayed parents of boys into giving up this charming name up. Even though it’s androgynous sounding, we still think it’s more masculine (and the charts prove this so). Unlike Madison and Addison, we think parents of little girls will be unsuccessful in their attempts to hijack this name over to the feminine side. They have other more feminine options: Camryn for instance.
