Etymology & Historical Origin - Cameron

Cameron comes from a medieval Highland Scottish clan name and is derived from the Gaelic words “cam” and “sròn” which lightheartedly translates to “crooked nose” (likely a nickname given to the clan’s first patriarch who may have had a hooked nose). The Highland Cameron clan was celebrated for their courage and ingenuity, and their clan motto is a Gaelic phrase meaning “unite.” The first recorded spelling of the family name appeared in the 13th century and was rendered as “de Kamerun”. In the Lowlands of Scotland, the clansmen are thought to have a territorial origin from the lands of Cameron near Edinburgh. In any case, Cameron has long been used as a forename for males and it is still quite common in Scotland (a Top 25 favorite). The United States is the only English-speaking country that really considers Cameron gender-neutral (although it is given to baby girls far less frequently). Cameron for boys is also on the Top 100 lists of England, Australia and Canada.

Popularity of the Name Cameron

Cameron first appeared on the U.S. female naming charts in 1980 (the decade when parents started liking androgynous names for their daughters). The popular actress Cameron Diaz certainly influenced this name for little girls in the later 1990s. In fact, Cameron for girls reached its high point in 1999 at position #176 on the female charts. Unlike for boys, however, the feminine Cameron has never reached the Top 100 (and probably never will). Spelling variations like Camryn and Kamryn are now around and offer a slightly more girly form of this traditionally male name. Cameron is a cool sounding name. It’s androgynous, it’s got that “surnamey” quality, it’s Scottish, and it’s got such a darling and playful origin (crooked nose). And if you like that meaning, consider another traditionally unisex name, Courtney – that means “short nose”!
