Etymology & Historical Origin - Camryn
Camryn is an Americanized version of the Gaelic name Cameron. Both Cameron and Camryn are considered unisex names in the United States. Cameron originated as a medieval Highland Scottish surname and is derived from the Gaelic words “cam” and “sròn” which playfully translates to the nickname “crooked nose”. The Highland Cameron family was renowned for their courage and ingenuity, and their clan motto is a Gaelic phrase meaning “unite.” The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Adam de Kamerun dated in the 13th century. In the Lowlands of Scotland, the Cameron clansmen are thought to have a territorial origin from the lands of Cameron near Edinburgh. Cameron has been used as a male given name for over a century, but morphed into a gender-neutral name over time. As the name gained popularity in the United States, reinvented versions of the name began to emerge – Camryn is one example of this.
Popularity of the Name Camryn
Camryn (like Cameron) is a unisex name in America. It developed as a given name recently in 1997 and may have been influenced by the popular actress Camryn Manheim who just won an Emmy for her performance on “The Practice” in 1998. Unlike Cameron which would be considered a three-syllable name (i.e., KAM-er-әn), Camryn reduces this sound down to a snappier two syllables (KAM-rin). It serves to simplify the name and Americanize an old Scottish charmer. It’s like taking Katherine and turning it into Kathryn. And we have to admit, the “-ryn” suffix really gives this spelling a feminine flair. Not surprisingly, it is far more popular for little girls versus little boys. We prefer Cameron for boys and Camryn for girls. It just seems to fit better. Both are cool sounding names, strong and androgynous but full of happy, playful character (must have something to do with that crooked nose!).
