Etymology & Historical Origin - Carleigh

One of the most overly respelled names in America, Carleigh is just one more variation of Carly. Carly developed as a short form of Caroline which is the female French equivalent to Charles (similar to Charlotte which has been shortened to Charlie). Charles is ultimately derived from the German Karl or Carl (from the Germanic “karl” meaning “free man”). The word originally signified a man who was free, but not of nobility – which is ironic given the number of “noble” people that have borne the name within European monarchies for centuries. The name owes much of its popularity in Europe from medieval times thanks to the 8th century (and early 9th century) Frankish leader and the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne. The name Charles was particularly popular among the Franks, who were a Germanic tribe. By the 15th century, upper-class people of England began to adopt the name, and the female version Caroline also came into common usage. Carly is a modern development, and, of course, spellings like Carleigh are super modern and super American.

Popularity of the Name Carleigh

Carleigh first appeared on the American female naming charts very recently in 2008. One of the least popular of all the many Carly spellings, Carleigh is having a hard time even staying on the Top 1000 list. This particular name has been so mutilated in terms of respellings that we’re sure it’s causing a fair amount of confusion in society. Girls with this name are likely to go through life confirming and reconfirming the unorthodox spelling of their name. We get how the “leigh” suffix is cute and all, but it may end up being a bit of a nuisance. Carleigh is also an informal, youthful name. One that attracts parents who prefer “cuteness” over sophistication and tradition.

Little 15: Carleigh's Confessions, Vol. 1 (Leanne Lomax) - Kindle Edition. When Carleigh DuMetz turns fifteen, she quickly joins her mischievous friends in seemingly innocent adventures, which brings to light her naïveté. Always wanting to be part of the crowd, Carleigh tries to grow up fast so she’ll fit in. She finds her first love in Aiken Lyons, a handsome young man from her neighborhood, who watched Carleigh grow into a beautiful young woman. The only problem is that his eighteenth birthday is the day after Aiken and Carleigh’s first date. If she wants to keep seeing him, they’ll have to keep their relationship a secret. Little 15 will take you into the tortured existence of a somewhat innocent adolescent girl who wants to experience the more exciting side of life, but rapidly finds herself on a collision course with disaster. Little 15 is the censored version of Reckless, and is intended for young adults. It contains mature content and strong language; but, the graphic details found in Reckless have been toned down drastically, or left out altogether. Little 15 is an excellent example of a teenager out of control, and should be taken as a warning to young people of the dangers inherent in growing up too fast, and keeping secrets from those who can truly help them avoid trouble.
