The name Carly, like Carla, developed as a feminine version of the German male name Karl/Carl, which itself is the German version of the English name Charles. The Germanic “karl” means ‘free man’ so Carly would henceforth be interpreted as ‘free woman.’ The name Carly is a modern mutation of Carl and mostly isolated to the United States.
