Etymology & Historical Origin - Carmelo

Carmelo is a Spanish and Italian masculine name traditionally given in honor of “Our Lady of Carmel”, one of the many epithets given to the Blessed Mother. Mt. Carmel is the name of a mountain in the Holy Land (modern day Haifa in the northern region of Israel) which was populated by very early Christian hermits who were the forerunners of the Carmelite order of monks. The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to one of Mt. Carmel’s monks in the 13th century which is how she received the moniker “Our Lady of Carmel”. Carmel is Hebrew in origin, from the word “karmel” (כַּרְמֶל) meaning “garden, orchard” because the mountain’s slopes were blanketed with abundant vegetation. When Spanish people name their children after “Our Lady of Carmel” they generally use Carmen for baby girls and Carmelo for baby boys. Melo is a common nickname.

Popularity of the Name Carmelo

Carmelo has been around in the United States since 1911 but has been used very sporadically. This name has bounced on and off the charts so many times in the past 100+ years we’d say it doesn’t know if it’s staying or going. Carmelo’s latest reappearance in 2004, however, has demonstrated the most promise for this uncommon masculine name. What prompted the sudden and renewed interest in the name? That credit can go to basketball superstar Carmelo Anthony who began his NBA career in 2003. Recently traded to the New York Knicks, Anthony spent most of his career with the Denver Nuggets. Carmelo Anthony was named after his Puerto Rican father (his mother is African-American). Today in the United States, the name Carmelo is no longer bestowed primarily by Hispanic-Americans, but rather by basketball fans in general. And perhaps when Carmelo Anthony retires from basketball he’ll find time to put his “gardening” skills to work. Shouldn’t all Carmelo’s have a green-thumb?
