Etymology & Historical Origin - Chaya
Chaya is the female equivalent of Chaim, from the Hebrew “chayyim” (חַיִּים) meaning “life”. The “Ch” consonant pronunciation is similar to that of Chanukah in Hebrew. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the names Hyam or Chaim were added to a person’s name during a period of serious illness as a prayer-like effort to restore health. In other words, Chaim was believed to promise health for the name bearer. Consider the familiar Hebrew toast “L’Chaim” (i.e., “To life!”) which is derived from the same place. The female version of Chaim is Chaya. Both names are mostly used by Jewish parents.
Popularity of the Name Chaya
Chaya did not come into circulation in the United States until the early 1980s and in the past few decades the name has only advanced only slightly up the charts. Unlike the masculine version Chaim, Chaya has a little more crossover appeal and is likely used outside of the Jewish American community as much as in it. This “life”-affirming name is an understated beauty and a hidden gem. Chaya has never been overused and is therefore quite original.

Children's Books on the Baby Name Chaya
Chaya and the Spider Gem (H.L. Rankin) - “OOWww!” came the pained cry, and the white cloak reared up. It shook itself and the top of it resolved into a pair of pointed ears and a muzzle full of indignantly bristled whiskers. “What in Lady’s name are you playing at?” growled the catman, rubbing at the tugged spot which Chaya had relinquished with alacrity. Flattened against the opposite wall, the normally erudite juggler gaped, noting almost subconsciously the slitted pupils, the irritably twitching tail, and that the ‘fur mitts’ worn by the ‘man’ were in fact paws, belonging to...no, it couldn’t be... “Y-you’re a Freyani! A real one!” After being rescued by Blancheur, a Freyani, Chaya and her new friend embark on a quest during which they battle thieves and soldiers, and encounter monks, trolls, dryads, and zombies as they set out to rescue the dwarf wizard, Malthor, from the Crimson Keep. But Chaya is caught and while she is left to face death as a sacrifice to evil, Blancheur races to assemble a force to free his friend and destroy the castle in which she is being held.
