Etymology & Historical Origin - Cruz
Cruz is the Spanish and Portuguese word for ‘cross’ symbolizing Jesus’ cross of the crucifixion (or the sign of the cross made by Catholics). The name was originally taken from the Latin “crusis” (also meaning ‘cross’). It has a long history of being used as an indentifying name in Latin antiquity before Christianity (when a cross was set up to mark a tribal eating place). As a personal name, it has been popularized in more modern times by the religiously minded in connection with the cross of Christ. There are several places throughout Spanish speaking countries and the United States so-called Santa Cruz (which translates to Holy Cross) and Vera Cruz (True Cross). Cruz is considered both feminine and masculine, but today it is almost exclusively used for little boys.
Popularity of the Name Cruz
The name Cruz did appear on the female naming charts in the 1920s and 30s, but at extremely low levels of usage. It disappeared completely from the girl’s list in 1941. This name is almost now considered exclusively masculine in the United States. For boy’s, the name appeared as far back as 1880, but it didn’t stick to the charts consistently until the 1920s (at very low popularity). Cruz was a name not often used in the United States until this century when it finally started to hit levels of moderate usage. The name acquired further currency when it was used by the ϋber celebrity couple David and Victoria Beckham in 2005, for their son Cruz Beckham notably born in Madrid, Spain. Cruz is not a name you think about often, but when you hear it, it starts to grow on you quickly. There’s just something super cool about it – even with all that heavy religious significance.
