Characteristics of Crystal
Etymology & Historical Origin - Crystal
The name Crystal comes from the Greek word “krystallos” which means ‘ice’. Crystal is the English word used to signify high-quality cut glass which is suggestive of a precious gemstone. The name was coined for girls in the 19th century around the time other gemstone names became fashionable (Ruby, Amber, Pearl). The crystal quartz is found high in the ice-cold Alps (Switzerland and France) and the ancient people believed them to be frozen ice which magically did not melt. The crystal is often a symbol of magical powers (think: the crystal ball) and is said to harness strong spiritual healing powers and represent the universal source of knowledge. A diamond is a type of crystal and both are considered the gemstone for April. Because crystals are transparent, they are also associated with ideals of clarity and purity.
Popularity of the Name Crystal
The name Crystal has been used for girls in America since the 19th century. At the turn of the 20th century, the name ranked rather low in terms of usage, but it steadily climbed as the decades wore on. It was really the 1970s and especially the 1980s that Crystal achieved ϋber-popularity in the United States. In 1982, the name Crystal landed a spot on the Top 10 list of most favored girl names – quite a triumph! The name was influenced by a character (Crystal Carrington) on the 1980s TV series “Dynasty”. Unfortunately, what goes up, eventually comes down – and usually the faster they climb, the faster they fall. As an ultra trendy name in a specific point in time, Crystal became too overused and thus experienced a bit of a backlash (another 80s favorite, Tiffany, had a similar experience on the charts). Today, in the early part of the 21st century, both names are back to moderate usage but we will probably forever associate them with the 1980s – which was the Me! Me! Me! Decade of status seekers. Now that the name Crystal has taken a break from overuse, she may once again regain her charm. Let’s just hope she’s not teased with the name “Crystal meth” or “Crystal the Pistol” – just some things to think about.
