Etymology & Historical Origin - Dalton

Dalton is the transferred use of an English surname from the Olde English “dæl” meaning ‘valley’ and “tūn” meaning ‘enclosure, settlement’. The surname developed as a place name for a person from a village located in a valley. There are several places in England so-called Dalton in the counties of Durham, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Northumberland – valleys within hilly districts. Many of the Daltons (Daultons, Daughtons and Dawtons) were from the aristocracy and landholders from these areas. The first recorded spelling of this surname dates back to the 13th century. Dalton has been in use as a forename since at least the 19th century.

Popularity of the Name Dalton

Dalton is one of those surnames that has been used as a forename in America longer than most. The name first showed up on the U.S. popularity charts in 1881 and really just bounced around the charts for the next several decades. It wasn’t until the late 1980s that Dalton started to show real promise. This is right around the time that surnames as first names were becoming all the rage. The height of Dalton’s popularity was between 1994 and 2001 when it managed to eke out a spot on the Top 100 list of most favored boy names. In the past ten years, however, Dalton has been showing backwards momentum on the charts. His day in the sun may be behind him at this point. Dalton is still shining bright in the states of Kentucky and West Virginia, however, where the name is a Top 100 favorite. Like Colton, Braxton or Kingston, Dalton is one of those surnames with a masculine edge. It also has an aristocratic air originating from the early name bearers. Dalton has also been around for longer than most making it more of a traditional choice compared to some of his other surname competitors.
