Etymology & Historical Origin - Darius

Darius is from the Greek masculine name Dareios which is a transliteration of a Persian name. It is thought to be derived from Dārayavahush (the name of several Persian kings), from the elements “dâraya” (to possess) and “vahu” (good). Probably the most famous of all name bearers was the 5th/6th century BC Persian king known as Darius the Great – who ruled when the Persian Empire was at its peak (following the footsteps of Cyrus the Great) and was noted for his overly-confident expansionist policies. During an invasion into Greece, Darius and his men were defeated at the Battle of Marathon (recognizing that they had greatly underestimated the Greek’s military power – plans were put into place to reinvade later). These plans were interrupted by the death of Darius. He is still remembered for his strong and wise rule over the great Persian Empire. He was known for religious tolerance, the promotion of education and agriculture and the construction of roads. He also built the great palace city of Susa. Darius has never been a particularly common name among English-speaking nations but it did come into more occasional use in the latter half of the 20th century.

Popularity of the Name Darius

Darius came onto the American naming charts in the 1960s, but the name was chiefly embraced by the African-American population in the 1990s. This may have been inspired by the lead singer of Hootie and the Blow Fish, the charming and talented Darius Rucker. In 1994, Hootie released one of the most successful albums of all time, Cracked Rear View, and its lead singer, Darius, would later become the most successful African-American on the nation’s country music charts. People also stood up and took notice of his kingly name. Since the turn of the 21st century, Darius has been slipping on the charts. His peak popularity may be behind him now, but Darius is still hanging onto a moderate position on the charts. The name has never been overused so retains a lot of originality. There’s just something about Darius. It has that “X” factor of confidence and coolness.

One night, after he had crossed a mighty river, on the way to his triumphs, he had a remarkable dream. His dream was that Darius, the son of one of his advisers, and a non-heir to the throne, appeared to him with vast wings growing from his shoulders, overshadowing the whole known world. To Cyrus, it seemed that Darius would eventually hold sway over his empire, and immediately sent for Hystaspes, the father of Darius, to keep a close eye on him until such a time as Cyrus could return.
