Etymology & Historical Origin - Dax

Dax is the transferred use of an early English surname with Anglo-Germanic origins derived from a nickname. The Germanic word “dachs” means “badger” (a burrowing nocturnal animal related to the weasel, with strong claws, short legs and fat bodies). The nickname was most common in the ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia (mostly populated by the Angles, a Germanic tribe from modern-day Northern Germany). It would have been used as a sobriquet describing a person with nocturnal habits or one with a streak of gray or fair hair against black (like the stripped black/white markings of a badger’s head). The earliest recording of the surname came in the early 13th century in Germany, rendered as “Dach”. As a given name, Dax is much more modern.

Popularity of the Name Dax

Dax appeared on the American male naming charts for the first time in 1970. This coincided with the release of a movie called “The Adventurers” spawned from the 1966 novel by Harold Robbins of the same name. Set in South America, the novel/film tells the story of “Dax” (an acronym for Diogenes Alejandro Xenos), a wealthy playboy who uses and abuses everyone in his path. Although the movie was critically panned, apparently the name Dax stuck. The name was never popular, and it only appeared on the charts between 1970 and 1978 before retreating back to obscurity. Dax reemerged again in 2007; this time we’re not sure what reminded parents of this minimalistic one syllable three-letter name. Perhaps it shares the same quality that attracts parents to names like Max, Jax, Dex and Rex. Perhaps it was new-comer actor and comedian Dax Shepard who was starting to get noticed. Whatever the interest in the name Dax, it’s definitely not a popular name by any means, but it does hold a place on the charts. It’s got that strong and snappy one syllable sound along with the “x” factor. Could also be an interesting choice for a financial wizard of German heritage since the German stock exchange is referred to as DAX (Deutscher Aktien IndeX). We do love the “badger” etymology for your own little honey badger who doesn’t give a s*** if you like his name or not!
