Characteristics of Derick
Etymology & Historical Origin - Derick
Derick is another English variant of Derek. Derek was actually brought to England not by the Norman-French in the 11th century as so many names were, but rather by the Flemish weavers who immigrated in large numbers to England from Flanders (modern day Belgium) starting in the 14th century. They were invited and encouraged to settle in England by King Edward III in an effort to develop the English weaving industry. Not only did they bring their spinning wheels, they also brought the name Derek (originally rendered as Dederick). Dederick was a Low German form of Theodoric, a Germanic personal name derived from the elements “þeud” meaning “people, race” and “rīc” meaning “power, rule.” Even through the name had been around in England for several centuries, its popularity among English-speaking people did not really take off until the middle of the 20th century. Derek, Derrick and Derick are all variant spellings of this old Flemish name.
Popularity of the Name Derick
Derick first appeared on the American male naming charts (i.e., the Top 1000 list) in 1957 – following the debut of Derek in 1943. Derek would go on to become a popular name choice in the 1970s and 80s so Derick just mimicked his success on the charts (to a lesser degree). Derick achieved his peak popularity in 1980 when he reached #338 on the charts. Today the spelling of Derick is back down at the bottom of the charts. He continues to compete with the more common spelling of Derek and Derrick, but he’s losing the race. No matter how it’s spelled, Derick is a strong sounding Germanic name – lots of confidence in those two syllables. The name is reminiscent of the Nordic Erik or the Irish Patrick. Snappy, no-nonsense and muscular.
