Etymology & Historical Origin - Dulce
Dulce is the Spanish word for ‘sweet, candy’. We know this name was in use during the Middle Ages because it was borne by Dulce I of León (a northwestern medieval kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula). Her sister was named Sancha (which means ‘saintly’). Sweet and Saintly – how cute is that? Although their father (Alfonso IX of León) tried to will the kingdom to his daughters after his death in the 13th century, female heirs were not recognized by the people and so this failed. Dulce is not a particularly popular female name, although it seems to appear throughout all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries. It’s similar to English speaking people naming their daughter Candy.
Popularity of the Name Dulce
Dulce has a short history on the U.S. female charts; the name only first appeared in 1990. Since that time, Dulce has reached low levels of moderate use. This is not one of the more common female first names among the Spanish-speaking population within the United States. Those honors go to Maria, Camila, Valeria, Daniela, and Valentina. Dulce is much less commonly used, and since it means ‘sweet’ it feels more like an informal pet name which is part of her charm. Any little girl so lucky to get this name will most likely go on to live “La Vida Dulce”.
