Etymology & Historical Origin - Elle

In the most straight-forward way Elle is simply the French pronoun meaning ‘she’. However, this name could also be considered a pet form of Eleanor or Ellen. Furthermore, the suffix “-elle” is common among female names (Isabelle, Gabrielle, Michelle, Danielle, Giselle, Noelle, etc). It so obviously feminizes names with the ‘she’ meaning. You might even say that Elle could serve as a nickname for any girl’s name starting with the letter L. This multifaceted simple beauty is also the name of a popular fashion magazine of – you guessed it – French origin. Interestingly, we don’t see that given name Elle on the French charts but it has been in use among all English speaking nations, particularly England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Australia and the United States.

Popularity of the Name Elle

We were shocked to see that this understated beauty only first appeared on the American female naming charts in 2002. Elle’s sudden appearance on the charts has everything to do with pop-culture. The ϋber-popular 2001 movie “Legally Blonde” starred Reese Witherspoon as the bubbly-blonde, Harvard-bound character named Elle Woods. In the film, Elle is a rich, pretty, sweet, smart, and moralistically-upright (if a bit naïve) law student. Young audiences across America responded to them name and Elle entered the charts at an impressively high position of #614 right off the bat. In the past 10 years, Elle has advanced to higher levels of mild moderation but is still a fairly underused name. Another famous bearer is Elle Macpherson, an Australian supermodel from the 1980s who holds the record number of appearances on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue (she was nicknamed ‘The Body’ for her tall, womanly, athletic stature). Elle is such a minimalistic gorgeous name, so much more sophisticated and elegant that Ellie, we’d recommend Elle as a birth name and Ellie as a nickname. Either way, Ellie is cute for childhood and Elle is gracefully stylish for adulthood. If you’re in the market for one-syllable girl names, Elle should be one to consider! “She” is the ultimate ‘she’!
