Etymology & Historical Origin - Ellie

The name Ellie is traditionally the pet form of the female name Eleanor; however, it can and has been used as a nickname for any girl’s name starting with the “El” element, e.g., Elizabeth, Ellen, Eloise, Elaine, Elle, etc. Ellie has been used as an independent given name for over a century, but its popularity as a stand-along name has really surged in this century. Unless the name is tied to a specific longer form, then there is essentially no etymological meaning of the name. However, several “El” names (such as Eleanor) are derived from the Germanic word “ali” which means ‘other, foreign’ so that’s probably the best meaning we can give to the name Ellie.

Popularity of the Name Ellie

Ellie is a name that was on the U.S. popularity charts at the turn of the 20th century, but only of moderate use. In 1930, the name basically disappears from the charts for over 60 years. The name emerges from hibernation in 1992 and takes about 20 years to climb a whopping 900 spots on the popularity charts. Ellie is almost on the Top 100 list of most favored girl’s names, and we bet it’s just a matter of time before this happens. Ellie has been mirroring the same trends that other 100-year-old girl’s names have been experiencing in the past couple of decades – a triumphant return! Since Ellie started out as a pet form, the name is sweet and unpretentious. It’s not as popular as Ella, but it’s higher ranked than Elle. Maybe a perfect compromise between the two. We would still recommend that parents consider giving the child a longer name (such as Eleanor, Eloise or even Isabelle) where Ellie still works as a nickname. That gives the girl a chance to lengthen her name in adulthood should she seek something slightly more sophisticated. All around, though, Ellie is a darling choice.
