Etymology & Historical Origin - Emely
Emely is an Americanized respelling of the classic English female name Emily. Emily comes from the Latin name “Aemilia” which is the feminine version of the Old Roman family name, “Aemilius” (which comes from the Latin “aemulus” meaning ‘rival’). The later Latin version of the name “Emilia” was probably used in medieval Italy, but as a given name for English girls, Emily wasn’t common until the 18th century. Princess Amelia Sophia moved to Great Britian from Hanover Germany when her grandfather, King George I, inherited the throne in 1714, succeeding Queen Anne as her closest living Protestant relative (the Protestant part was important because Anne had scores of Catholic relatives Parliament refused to recognize). And so started the House of Hanover within the English monarchy. Princess Amelia was referred to as Emily in England and she alone helped popularize the name. By the 18th century, Emily was one of the more common names in England and so has a distinctive British flavor to it. The respelling of Emely is mostly an Americanized rendering of this name (although Emely oddly shows up on the female naming charts in Austria).
Popularity of the Name Emely
This newly invented respelling of Emily first appeared on the female naming charts in 1995. In that year, Emily was the 3rd most popular name in America; new spelling variations were bound to happen. This is the United States after all, where parents just love to differentiate themselves (and their daughters) with altered forms of popular names. Emely and Emily are pronounced exactly the same way, so I guess we don’t get the point. Don’t be surprised if you hear some grumblings out there as a result. Many Americans find these types of invented, creative spellings kitschy and tasteless. But they’re traditionalists and you may find Emely “cuter” or more phonetically appealing. It’s your decision and we respect that. Just be forewarned: your daughter will go through life constantly having to confirm and reconfirm the spelling of her name. It’s just one of those nuisances. Fortunately, 80% of parents who select this name will use the traditional Emily spelling. About 5-6% of the “Emily’s” being born today receive the spelling of Emely – currently the 2nd most popular spelling variation of this name.
