Etymology & Historical Origin - Emerson

Emerson is the transferred use of an English surname meaning, quite literally, son of Emery. The name Emery came to England by way of the Norman French and has roots in the Germanic language – from the ancient Germanic personal name “Amalric”. Amalric is comprised of the Germanic elements “amal” (meaning ‘bravery’) and “rīc” (meaning ‘powerful’). The French brought the name to England after the 11th century Norman Invasion where it was anglicized to Emmeric and eventually to Emery by the 13th century. Emerson developed from Emery as a patronymic surname. It has historically been used as a male personal name since the 19th century but today, in the 21st century, Emerson is now considered unisex. As forename, both Emery and Emerson are primarily used in the United States versus other English-speaking nations.

Popularity of the Name Emerson

Although today the name Emerson is considered unisex, it has had a much longer and time-tested career on the American male naming charts. The usage of surnames as first names is a trend that primarily started in the South, and dates back to at least the 18th century here in America. Using surnames as forenames for little girls is a much more recent trend dating back only a few decades. So Emerson started as a masculine name, and this makes perfect sense with that “son” suffix. Not to mention the “brave and powerful” etymology of Emerson. We think both Emerson and Emery are cool choices for baby boys. There’s a certain “no-frills” British sensibility to this name. It hasn’t been bestowed commonly enough on the female gender to make it “girly” making it still a safe choice for the baby boys out there. We also love the fact that Emerson is a Number Eight in numerology – the number that has everything to do with power and authority – just to further underscore the name’s root meaning.
