Etymology & Historical Origin - Fisher
Fisher is the transferred use of an English surname derived from an occupation name. The surname’s etymology can be found in the Olde English “fiscere” meaning “to catch fish”. Such a surname would have been given in the Middle Ages to men who were fishermen, or those who caught fish as a means of income. The surname first appeared in writing in the 13th century and was recorded as “le Fischer” in Essex England. We have to assume most of the “Fishers” living in medieval England dwelled in coastal towns where the fish were abundant! As a male given name Fisher is used pretty infrequently and mainly in America and Canada.
Popularity of the Name Fisher
Fisher follows the “surname” trend rampant in America today (Mason, Logan and Jackson are the current favorites). However, as far as surnames go, Fisher is pretty uncommon as a masculine given name. It did appear once on the charts way back in the late 19th century, but for all intents and purposes, it’s really new to the charts having arrived in 2004. Fisher still has not achieved anything higher than the bottom of the Top 1000 list, so we’d have to say it’s one of the more original last names on the charts today. The only notable Fisher we can think of is actor and filmmaker Fisher Stevens, but he was actually born Steven Fisher and just reversed the order of his name. It certainly had the added advantage of making his name stand out more. Still, Fisher can be a “fishy” choice depending on how you look at it. It sounds cool, but let’s hope your little guy turns out to be a competent fisherman one day or else the name runs the risk of being ironic. The great thing about fishing (and hence this name) is that over 50 million Americans participate in the sport of fishing in some way shape or form. Probably one in five people you meet either freshwater or open ocean saltwater fish. All you need to do is turn on your TV set to the scores of fishing shows on any outdoor channel – from daring occupational fishermen in “Deadliest Catch” to manly sport fishermen to purest fly fishermen to the campy "Hillbilly Handfishin'" fishermen. There’s a certain nature-loving element to this name. Fisher is also a very democratic name since the sport of fishing is enjoyed by people across all socio-economic groups.
