Etymology & Historical Origin - Gavin

Gavin is the late medieval Lowland Scottish and English form of the ancient Welsh masculine name Gawain (although its etymology is not altogether certain). Gawain, in turn, is generally associated with the ancient Celtic Gwalchgwyn, from the Welsh elements “gwalch” meaning “hawk” and “gwyn” meaning “white, fair”. Gawain is best remembered as Sir Gawain, one of the notable Knights of the Roundtable in Arthurian legends. It was said that Gawain’s power grew as the sun heightened in the sky, and diminished as the sun set. The name was made most famous by a lengthy medieval poem written in a dialect of Middle English sometime in the 14th century (by an unknown author) called “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” (or “Sir Gawayn ande the Grene Knyӡt” in its Middle English variation). Sir Gawain is basically romanticized as the perfect knight; the embodiment of all that is excellent. He’s handsome, loyal, strong, brave and chivalrous. See literary references below for more detail. Although Gawain/Gavin is essentially an ancient Celtic name, it was pretty much forgotten by the 18th century. Fortunately this “white hawk” is flying again (after a 20th century revival). First it was resurrected in England and Ireland, but today Sir Gavin is most popular in the United States and Canada.

Popularity of the Name Gavin

Even though Gavin popped on and off the American male naming charts in the 1950s, the name didn’t really take hold until the 1960s. Gavin’s popularity was primarily low-to-moderate in the latter half of the 20th century. His breakthrough came in the 21st century when, in the year 2000, Gavin achieved Top 100 status for the first time ever. He may have already reached his peak success, though, because now he appears to be leveling off on the higher end of the Top 50 scale. Gavin’s usage has grown along with a modern trend that favors Celtic-sounding names in America – although unlike the popularity of Irish names, Gavin is Welsh (like Dylan, Rhys and Trevor). Even though Gavin has become slightly trendy in recent years, the name doesn’t feel worn-out or over-used. There’s a simple manliness to the name; a certain knightly quality.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (14th century) One of the oldest Arthurian tales, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a romance poem outlining an adventure of Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table in Camelot. In the poem, Sir Gawain accepts a challenge from a mysterious warrior who is completely green. The "Green Knight" offers to allow anyone to strike him with his axe if the challenger will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts, and beheads him in one blow, only to have the Green Knight stand up, pick up his head, and remind Gawain to meet him at the appointed time. The story of Gawain's struggle to meet the appointment and his adventures along the way demonstrate the Celtic spirit of chivalry and loyalty.
