Etymology & Historical Origin - Grady

Grady is the transferred use of a surname anglicized from the old Irish Ó Grádaigh which is derived from the Gaelic word “gradaim” meaning ‘distinction, honor’ or more simply from “grada” meaning ‘illustrious one’. This ancient Irish sept occupied territory covering most of County Clare and some parts of Limerick and Tipperary. One ‘distinction’ the O’Grady family can claim is the official recognition of their chieftainship in Ireland (one of the few). Some of the O’Grady’s who supported the 13th century English invaders into Ireland changed their name to Brady. Grady remains a popular surname in Ireland and is generally only used as a forename in the United States.

Popularity of the Name Grady

Surprisingly, the name Grady has been around on the American popularity charts for over a century. In fact, at the turn of the 20th century the name was at the height of its popularity with fairly moderate usage. The name started to decline by the 1940s and reached its all-time low point in the early 1990s when it came dangerously close to dropping off the male naming charts altogether. Since the turn of the 21st century, however, Grady is changing his tune. The name is not quite as popular as it was 100 years ago, but it’s definitely on the upswing. Its appeal has to do with the trendiness of using surnames as first names and the popularity of Irish names. Grady is very similar sounding to Brady – and even some of the O’Grady clan actually became Brady’s in Ireland. Both names are Irish, simple and charming.
