Characteristics of Haiden
Etymology & Historical Origin - Haiden
Haiden is an Americanized respelling of Hayden. Hayden, in turn, is the transferred use of an old Anglo-Saxon surname originating from a place name, from one of the various places in England called Heydon and Haydon. These location names come from a combination of two Olde English words “heg” (hay) and “dun” (down, hill) so “hay down” became Haydon. The surname may have also originated as a nickname – from the Olde English “hæðen”, an epithet given to a heathen, or one who is "not Christian or Jewish." Lastly, the name Hayden may have been given as a first name as homage to the Austrian composer Josef Haydn (1732-1809) by the music-loving Welsh. In any case, as a given name Hayden has been in use since the 19th century and is currently quite popular for boys in the United States, England and Australia. In America Hayden is considered gender-neutral, but Haiden is mainly masculine.
Popularity of the Name Haiden
The spelling of Haiden just appeared on America’s Top 1000 list for boys in 2004 right around the time Hayden became a Top 100 masculine given name nationwide. Haiden was an alternate spelling created in the wake of Hayden’s popularity. Respellings are especially common among Americans; many parents see this practice as a way of differentiating their children from the many other “Haydens” out there.
