Characteristics of Hayden
Etymology & Historical Origin - Hayden
There are three possibilities on how Hayden may have come to be a given name. The name Hayden is the transferred use of a surname originating in England and derived from a location name. It comes from a combination of two Old English words “heg” (hay) and “dun” (down, hill) so “hay down” became Haydon. It also may have derived from a surname originating as a nickname – from the Old English “hæden” – a word for a heathen, or one who is "not Christian or Jewish." Lastly, the name Hayden may have been given as a first name as homage to the Austrian composer Josef Haydn (1732-1809) by the music-loving Welsh. In any case, it appears as if the name Hayden has been in use since the 19th century. It is now used for both girls and boys, but quite a bit more as a male given name. It’s currently a top 100 name for boys in England, Wales, Australia and the United States.
Popularity of the Name Hayden
Hayden has been in use in America for boys for over 100 years, although it’s position on the charts was near the bottom signifying its little use. The name’s popularity really comes just after the turn of the 21st century when “-den” names started to dominate the charts (Aiden, Jayden, Brayden, Caden), particularly on the male side. America’s love affair with these “-den” names has produced so much over-usage that polls are starting to display hostile attitudes about the names from the general public. So if you don’t mind a little eye-rolling behind your back, embrace the name. Once the name was well-established for boys, parents decided they liked it for their little girls, as well. Hayden debuts on the most-popular charts for girls in 1998 and enjoys a quick climb up the charts. It’s interesting to note that Hayden for both males and females have lost some position in the last two to three years, evidence, perhaps, that people are tiring of trend.
