Etymology & Historical Origin - Jacey
Jaycee and Jacey are modern American inventions and therefore names with no definitive etymological foundations. Some people believe Jacey was coined from Jason; in other words, sort of a female version of Jason. Jason is a Greek name (Iásōn) from the Greek verb “iasthai” meaning “to heal, cure”. Jacey’s connection to Jason, however, is a bit of a stretch. Rather, it was more likely developed through the combination of appealing syllables, in this case “Jay” + “Cee” which produces a very casual and informal girl’s name. Although Jacey is technically female, there is a certain gender-neutrality to this name – mainly because “J.C.” is a common nickname for boys who might be called James Cameron or John Conner, for example. The names Jaycee and Jacey could even be considered a nod to Jesus Christ (the ultimate “J.C.”). Lastly, Jacey was merely following the trend in “-acey” stylized names: Stacey, Tracey, Lacey and Macey. Whatever the attraction, Jacey is a relaxed and no-frills name choice. Very colloquial, very casual and very approachable.
Popularity of the Name Jacey
Jacey found her place on America’s Top 1000 list for the first time in 1996. Although she beat Jaycee to the charts by a couple of years, she isn’t as popular. In fact, Jacey has never seen much success as a girl’s name, even when combined with Jaycee’s usage. Jacey’s audience is probably confined to parents who are looking for ultimate informality in a name. Jacey fits the bill. Because the name sounds like you’re sounding out initials (J.C.), it has an especially casual sensibility. Laid-back, sporty, upbeat and friendly, maybe Jacey isn’t a name for every parent, but she certainly doesn’t give off any airs. We can’t help but to ask ourselves: What Would Jacey Do?

Jacey Cameron in the Lost State of Franklin (J. R. Nakken) - When Jacey Cameron, a seventh grader at Port Ransom Junior High in Washington State, receives a magical legacy from her dying grandmother, she doesn’t know what to think. “In this box is a necklace,” Grandma Jane tells her, “that will take you back in time, where you will make a difference, and you will bring something back.” Jacey isn’t sure she believes her old grandmother, but she takes the beat up old wooden box home with her after promising Grandma Jane that she will check it each night. “If the box is warm,” Grandma says, “it will open for you. Wear the necklace to bed, and you will awaken in the place you are sent, where the necklace is invisible. It will send you home when the time is right, and not a minute will pass in your bedroom.” A few nights later the box is warm and opens to her touch. The intricate gold choker with the blue-gray center stone fits her neck perfectly, and Jacey begins to believe her Grandma’s tale. She awakens in 1787 and her adventure begins… Recommended for ages 10-14.
