Characteristics of Jacoby
Etymology & Historical Origin - Jacoby
Jacoby is most likely the transferred use of a patronymic Jewish surname derived from the Hebrew personal name “Yaakov” which was eventually Latinized to Jacob. The original Hebrew name is derived from the word "akev" which literally translates to "at the heel". In Genesis 25:26, Jacob was born the younger twin to Isaac and Rebecca and he "came out with his hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob." The Lord told Rebecca that the younger would be stronger, and that the older would serve the younger. As the Biblical story progresses, the cunning Jacob eventually supplants his older brother by stealing his birthright and his father's blessing. "Is he not rightly named Jacob?" Esau asks in Genesis 27:36. "For he has supplanted me these two times." Therefore, the name is also often associated with the verb ‘to supplant’.
Popularity of the Name Jacoby
Jacoby first appeared on the American male naming charts in 1983 but for almost 25 years this name languished at low levels of popularity on the charts. Suddenly in 2007 and 2008, the name advanced nearly 500 positions up the charts in two short years. This is extremely rapid growth within a short timeframe. What influenced the abrupt interest in this name? Well, it only took a little bit of research to discover that the New England states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts were behind the movement. In 2007, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series and debuting that year was a young player named Jacoby Ellsbury. The New York Times described him as a "cult hero" who brought "speed, improved defense, and unbridled enthusiasm" to his team. An obvious fan favorite, New England states responded by placing the name Jacoby in their Top 100 which impacted the name’s popularity nationwide. The flurry of interest in the name has waned in more recent years however. Still, Jacoby is an alternative to the ever-popular Jacob.
