Characteristics of Jagger
Etymology & Historical Origin - Jagger
Jagger is an interesting surname-turned-first name. Of course we all know this name was influenced by the Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger (much in the same way that Lennon and Marley took shape as musician-inspired given names). However, before there was Mick Jagger there was the English surname Jagger. Jagger developed from an occupation name during the Middle Ages but especially Yorkshire dialect where the Middle English word “jag” (meaning “pack, load”) was used in reference to a “jagger” – i.e., a peddler or hawker of goods. Kind of like a modern-day door-to-door salesman. The first recorded spelling of this surname appeared in Yorkshire in the late 14th century (rendered as “Jager”). Because Jagger was an occupation name turned surname so connected to Yorkshire, it is believed most modern-day Jaggers are ultimately descended from this medieval family of “peddlers”. Jagger as a forename is primarily an American coinage, but it also appears with low frequency in Canada and South Australia.
Popularity of the Name Jagger
Mick Jagger was already becoming an American “PHEE-nom” in the late 1960s but it wouldn’t be until the 21st century that the name Jagger appeared as a baby boy’s name on the U.S. charts (2001). The surname craze is alive and well in America, so parents are looking for new and interesting last names to use as first names. Jagger is one of the more recent discoveries. Although truth be told, Mick Jagger is old enough to be your baby’s granddaddy. What’s weird is that Jagger debuted at position #661 on the charts in 2001, which is a pretty high first appearence. It’s unclear to us what as the impetus behind this sudden interest in Jagger; maybe it had something to do with Mick Jagger’s 2001 release of his solo album “Goddess in the Doorway”. The name was used for a spell, then went away, and then came back again. Just like Mick Jagger – and old rock-n-roller who keeps on keeps on giving. Jagger is a name synonymous with Rock and Roll, but it also has a certain “jagged” quality – a little uneven and awkward as a given name. But hey, we get it. This old “peddler” has been “hawking” his music for half a century now. All we can say is: that’s bloody-well alright with us, mate!
