Characteristics of Jaylon
Etymology & Historical Origin - Jaylon
Jaylon developed as an alternate spelling of Jalen, a late 20th century name invention used mainly within the African-American community. The sudden usage of Jalen as a name for baby boys was influenced by University of Michigan basketball star Jalen Rose when he was a part of the “Fab Five” college basketball elite, leading the Wolverines to the NCAA Championship games in 1992 and 1993. He was the team’s leader, point guard and highest scorer; Jalen would go on to play professionally from 1994 to 2007 (most notably for the Indiana Pacers). Apparently, Jalen Rose received his name through the combination of his father’s name (James) and his mother’s brother’s name (Leonard). Thanks to the popularity of Jalen as an American boy’s name (especially among Blacks), Jaylen, Jaylin and Jaylon emerged as spelling variations. Not to mention Jaylyn(n) and Jaelyn(n) surfaced on the girl’s naming chart.
Popularity of the Name Jaylon
Jaylon debuted on the American male naming charts in 1994, right on the heels of Jalen (1992). Jaylon also mimicked the immediate popularity of Jalen, only to a lesser extent. The height of Jaylon’s usage came in 2002 when the name reached position #398 on the Top 1000 list. Right now Jaylen is the most common spelling on the charts (having surpassed Jalen in 2005). Jalen and Jaylon are trending backwards and the Jaylin spelling is shared by baby girls today. Now with Jaelyn and Jaylyn on the girl’s naming charts, parents may be losing interest due to over-feminization. There seems to be an overabundance of Jay names for both genders: Jaycee, Jaycob, Jayden, Jayda, Jaylee, Jaylen, Jayson and Jayvion. Not to mention all of their variant spellings. Is anyone else getting tired of the Jay, Kay and Bray names, or are we just “Jay”ded? The coolness factor just might be wearing off.
