Etymology & Historical Origin - Jazmin

Jazmin is an Americanized respelling of the French/Arabic female name Jasmine, from the old Persian “yasamin”, the name of the flowering plant of the olive genus. The Jasmine is a very fragrant climbing flower and a symbol of elegance and grace. In Arabic, Jasmine means ‘gift from God’. Jazmin is a new coinage, invented in the United States as a result of the popularity of Jasmine.

Popularity of the Name Jazmin

Jazmin followed Jasmine onto the charts in 1981 after the latter name began to show a lot of success. American parents are notorious for getting creative with spelling variations of popular names. It causes some grumbling, but it’s a naming practice now so embedded in the modern American naming tradition it’s hard to ignore. Once Jasmine became a favorite name in America, names like Jazmin, Jazmine, Jasmin and Jazmyn began popping up on the charts. Jazmin is the second most popular spelling of the name right now. By adding the “Jaz” suffix, we suppose parents are trying to “jazz” up the old Persian name. We must admit, it works!
