Etymology & Historical Origin - Jocelyn

Jocelyn was brought to England by way of the Norman Conquest in the 11th century. The name finds its roots in an Old French masculine personal name, Joscelin. Joscelin was essentially the French way of saying Gautzelin – the name ascribed to the people of an ancient Germanic tribe who dwelled in southern Sweden and Northern Europe. They originated from what is still the Swedish province of Götaland, and the Gauts/Geats (as they are also known) are the same folks who populate the pages of “Beowulf”, a heroic epic poem written in Olde English (considered one of the most vital pieces of Anglo-Saxon literature, and certainly the oldest surviving). The etymology of the word Gaut/Geat is derived from the Old Germanic “geutan” (Gautar in Old Norse) meaning “to pour, flowing water” (apropos since water was essential to the survival of these ancient Scandinavian tribes). Joscelin, and later Jocelyn, were quite common masculine names during the Middle Ages. The application shift to females did not happen until hundreds of years later in the 20th century. Today the name is considered almost exclusively female and is a Top 100 choice for American baby girls.

Popularity of the Name Jocelyn

Jocelyn debuted on the United States popularity charts for the first time in 1927. The name’s usage for girls was very low to moderate for the first few decades, but then it really started to take-off in the 1960s. After almost 75 years of usage, Jocelyn finally achieved a hard-won spot on America’s Top 100 list in 2002. Her peak popularity came in 2007 when the name became the 50th most favorite nationwide. Today, Jocelyn is on a modest downward trend but is still a top choice for baby girls. In fact, more recently, spelling variations have emerged providing further testament to the name’s staying power. Jocelyn & The Ballerina (Nancy Hartry) - Love is blind, which explains Jocelyn's enduring attachment to her tattered Ballerina, a tutu and leggings long past their glittering prime. "Every day my mom says, 'Jocelyn, you're not wearing that old rag again, are you?'" Jocelyn explains, "I pretend not to hear." But Mom insists Ballerina isn't appropriate for Aunt Judy's wedding. The Pink is better--that fancy, new summertime dress that Jocelyn must wear as the flower girl. What is Jocelyn to do? Children will love the story as much as Jocelyn loves her Ballerina.
