Etymology & Historical Origin - Jonathon

Jonathon is a spelling variant of Jonathan. The name Jonathan is borne from the Bible as one of King Saul’s sons, who became a devoted friend and supporter of the young David (despite the fact that his father, Saul, was extremely jealous of David). He is thus seen as a symbol of loyalty and friendship, as in God has given Jonathan’s friendship to David. Upon Jonathan’s death in the Bible, David laments: “I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant you have been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women.” (2 Samuel 1:26). Jonathan comes from a Hebrew word that contains the same elements as the name Matthew, meaning “God has given.” One of the most notable namesakes comes from the 17th century Irish writer, Jonathan Swift. Jonathon is another spelling wherein the “than” suffix is swapped for “thon”.

Popularity of the Name Jonathon

Jonathon became a 20th century spelling variation of the more popular and traditional Jonathan. It first appeared on the American male naming charts in 1946 and from there pretty much mirrored the success of Jonathan (but to a much lesser extent). Today, Jonathon does not fare as well as the classic Jonathan which remains a Top 50 choice. Jonathon has been going out of style as we’ve entered the 21st century as parents seem less interested in this less traditional spelling. Johnathan and Johnathon are also newly created spellings adding more competition among choices available today. All names are pronounced the same, so we say stick with Jonathan. It’s just easier.

Johnathon (Jo Ann Burroughs) - "Johnathon" is a heart-warming story about a neglected, abused, unloved child and an elementary school teacher. The book follows the course of a year in which the teacher has Johnathon in her class. The teacher progresses from a state of utter disbelief at Johnathon's appearance and actions to a feeling of sincere love and caring for the poor little boy. During the course of the year, Johnathon, too, learns to love and to let himself be loved. During the year that is related in the book, Johnathon experiences everything from learning he must bathe on a daily basis to being left at school and told he must find a new family before school dismisses. The teacher, through all of her trials and tribulations with Johnathon, must learn to deal with each and every new situation, maturing and developing throughout the book. Recommended for parents.

The Jonathon Letters (Michael Trout) - This book gathers together an exchange of letters over the first year of placement of a particularly troubled child suffering from attachment disorder. The correspondence is between Lori Thomas, the foster/adoptive mother, and Michael Trout, Director of The Infant-Parent Institute in Illinois. Unbeknownst to the two parties, they were recording the story of the tortuously slow and unsteady opening up of the soul of a little boy. The Jonathon Letters was created in the hopes that these recorded experiences may help others who struggle to heal their child with attachment disorder. It is a tale of ups and downs, because that's how it is with children whose beginnings have been so tortured. But the reader begins to get a sense of the driving energy of this unique family, who somehow bounce back after every regression, and find ways to understand Jonathon's defiance and rage and to remain connected to their purpose - to help this child heal. Recommended for parents.
