Etymology & Historical Origin - Keely
Keely is almost an Irish female name – at least we know it was probably inspired by one. For instance, the Irish name Keela comes from the Gaelic “cadhla” meaning “beautiful, graceful”, but mostly in the sense of a rare beauty, as in girl “so beautiful that only poets can describe her.” The other possible etymology for Keely is from an ancient Irish personal name Caoladhe, from the Gaelic “caol” meaning "slender". Technically speaking, however, Keely isn’t truly Irish.
Popularity of the Name Keely
The name Keely debuted on the American female naming charts for the first time in 1959, most likely influenced by the popularity of jazz singer Keely Smith (who was actually born Dorothy Jacqueline Keely in 1932). Keely is a name that hasn’t exactly caught on in the United States, but it has been used with some mild frequency. The height of this name’s popularity was achieved in 1997 at position #455 out of 1000 when about 550 baby girls were given this name. Unfortunately, 2009 marks the last year Keely managed to secure even a Top 1000 ranking, which means it’s now given to less than 200. Keely is a cute, informal name with an Irish sensibility.
