Etymology & Historical Origin - Kiara
Kiara is a variant of the Irish female name Ciara (masculine equivalent Ciarán) from the Irish Gaelic word “ciar” meaning ‘black, dark’. This name dates back many centuries and would have been bestowed upon children with dark features. Saint Ciar was an Irish nun who lived in the 7th century noted for the establishment of a monastery at Kilkeary. Ciara is the traditional Irish spelling but other forms of the name are also used including Ciarra, Keira, Kiera, Kira, Keera and Kiara. Oddly enough, Kiara is a popular name today in a diversity of countries: Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Chile and Australia.
Popularity of the Name Kiara
Kiara first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1988. Apparently, the usage of this name was influenced by a R&B singing duo called Kiara. Then the name got another big push up the charts in 1998 with the Disney release of “The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride” featuring the mischievous daughter lioness to Simba and Nala. Kiara briefly made the Top 100 list of most favored girl names in 1999 thanks in large part to this animated film. Since the year 2000, however, Kiara has been on the downswing. Today the name is used with mild moderation. It’s a pretty name and a name to consider for parents who like Irish names. Keira is currently the most popular version of Ciara, but Kiara is still holding her own.
